Hope Lodge was built between 1743-47 by Samuel Morris, a prosperous Quaker entrepreneur. Morris acted as a farmer, shipowner, miller, ironmaster, shop owner, and owner of the mill now known as Mather Mill. Hope Lodge is an excellent example of early Georgian architecture. Edmund Woolley is credited with designing and building Hope Lodge for Samuel Morris, but his most famous building was the Pennsylvania State House (later Independence Hall).
